Map-Pack Showdown

Watch 100 customers choose between you and your competitors on Google. Then see which single fix would win you the most of them.

100 people search for what you sell. Who do they pick? Each glowing dot is one customer choosing. The thicker the river, the more customers that business wins.

    Enter the numbers

We started you with example numbers so the picture is alive. Replace them with the real ones from Google. It takes about two minutes, and your numbers stay in your browser.

What would move you up the most?

Press Try it to apply a fix to your numbers and watch the river change. This is an illustrative model of what customers see on Google, not Google's real ranking formula.

How does the Showdown decide who wins?

It scores each business on six things customers can see on Google: how many reviews, the star rating, how recent the reviews are, how many photos there are, whether the owner replies and how good the website is. Higher scores attract more of the 100 customers. The weights are our own illustrative assumptions, so use it to compare options, not to predict exact results.

Where do I find my competitors' numbers?

Search your service plus your city on your phone, then tap each business in the map results. You will see the review count, rating and photos right on their profile, and you can sort reviews by newest to see how recent they are.

    Is my data saved anywhere?

Only in your own browser, so the tool remembers your numbers next time. Nothing is sent to us unless you press the button to send your showdown to our team.

Why the map pack decides who gets the call

The map pack is the short list of businesses Google shows above the normal results for a local search. It gets the first look, so it gets the first call.

    Why it matters

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that you cannot pay for a better local ranking. That is good news for small businesses: the things you can improve are the things that decide the result.

Reviews sit inside prominence. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking, which is why review count, rating and recent activity carry so much weight in this tool.

    How to read your result

The Showdown scores six things a customer can see: review count, star rating, how recent the reviews are, photos, owner replies and website quality. Each business gets a share of 100 customers.

Read the leader first. The competitor with the biggest share is showing you what customers reward in your market. Then read the fix list: it ranks which single change moves you up the most. The weights are our own illustration, so compare options with it instead of predicting exact calls.

    What to do next

    1. Do the fix the tool ranks first.
    2. Ask every happy customer for a review the day the job ends. Never offer rewards for reviews.
    3. Reply to every review, good or bad, in plain words.
    4. Run the Showdown again in 30 days with fresh numbers.
76%of consumers always or regularly read online reviews when browsing for local businesses, and 38% expect an average of at least 4 stars before they consider one.BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey 2023
